The mission of Sugar Grove Nature Center is to provide a place where individuals can experience, study, and enjoy the environment and history of Funks Grove, and as a result be inspired to become responsible stewards of the environment.
Since opening our doors, the Nature Center has provided a place where nature exploration, learning, and enjoyment occurs on a daily basis. All of our programs are designed to instill awareness of and appreciation for the natural world.
An estimated 20,000 people visit each year, many participating in formal programming, site tours, special events, and seasonal celebrations at Sugar Grove Nature Center. Schools from across central Illinois visit for field trip experiences and our partnerships with local Universities and Colleges provide education through on-site research and internship experiences. Visitors from near and far stop in to enjoy our interpretive exhibits, live animals, and wildlife viewing room.
Sugar Grove Nature Center is especially dedicated to providing nature education and experiences for children. Throughout the school year, classes from central Illinois (and beyond) visit to learn about the native flora and fauna of Illinois. Summer nature study classes for 3-15 year olds provide opportunities for hands-on learning in the prairie, forest, and creek. Annually, hundreds of scouts participate in programs and have the opportunity to experience camping in the Grove. Our Nature Birthday Parties have become extremely popular, with several children each month celebrating their “big day” in nature!
