Summer Nature
Study
Programs 2008
Fostering a love and appreciation of nature at an
early age is so very important. What better way to spend the summer
than exploring, discovering, and learning about nature! With a diverse
range of topics geared towards ages 3 and up, you are sure to find a
program to fit your interests! Advanced registration is required and
class size is limited. Registrations must be received two weeks prior to
the program start date. Programs may be cancelled if minimum
participant numbers are not met. To register, please fill out the
Summer Nature Study Form located at the bottom of the page and mail it
in with your payment.
Little Wonders
Ages 3-5
Session 1
Tuesdays, June 17, 24, July 1, & 8
10:00 - 11:30 a.m. OR 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. (a.m.
session is closed for registration)
Fee: $20/child members, $28/child non-members
Registration required.
June 17: Garden Party
Dig in the dirt and help plants grow!
June 24: Inside Eggs
Many kinds of animals hatch from eggs! Learn
about them and the interesting way that they enter the world.
July 1: A Bounty of Beetles
From ladybugs to fireflies, beetles come in
all different shapes and sizes. Which will be your favorite?
July 8: Little Hikers
Find out what you need to know to get
the most out of your next hike, then put what you致e learned to
the test!

July 23: Tadpoles, Toads, and Frogs
Follow the lives of toads and frogs, from
swimming to hopping.
July 30: Flowers: More than just Pretty
Petals
Yes, they are pretty, but they are also an
important part of the plant. Discover what they do and why.
August 6: Hide & Seek
Animals play their own game of hide and
seek. Explore what camouflage is all about.
August 13: Little Campers
Join us for a fun "pretend" indoor campout,
complete with stars, night sounds, and s'mores!
Nature Nuts
Ages 6 - 10
Dead Tree Biology
Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday, June 18,
19, & 20, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
$60/members, $75/non-members; Registration required.
Bring a sack lunch, snacks provided.
Examine a tree as its life comes to an end.
It is really just the beginning! Many animals, plants, and
fungi depend on dead logs for their own lives. We値l observe
these relationships first hand, as well as take hikes and create
art projects.
Beautiful Birds
Thursdays, July 24, 31, & August 7, 10:00

Learn all about birds from the inside out!
We値l study the features that make birds unique as a group, then
delve into specific kinds, such as owls, songbirds, and water
birds. In addition, we値l take hikes and do other bird related
crafts & activities.
Girl's Sleepover

Girl痴 Sleepover
Wednesday, June 25, 6 p.m. - Thursday,
June 26, 9 a.m.

Play traditional sleepover games with a
nature-themed twist! What's included: Dinner, breakfast,
snacks, a place to sleep, and lots of fun! What to bring: a
sleeping bag, pillow, and personal toiletries.

microbiology, you will learn how to use a microscope and view
specimens that you collect in and around the Nature Center!

Bring a sack lunch, snacks provided.
We値l tromp in the creek looking for and
learning about these often overlooked, but fascinating animals.
Plan on getting very wet! Bring a towel, shoes suitable for
creek walking (Crocs or similar shoes work well), and an extra
set of clothing.
Adult Adventures
Ages 16 & UP
Nature Drawing Basics
Tuesdays, July 15, 22, & 29, & August 5,
6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Fee: $40/members, $50/non-members, all materials included.
Registration required.
Using pencil, explore various methods of
observing and drawing nature related subject matter. We'll be
working from photographs, still life, and live specimens to
emphasize the components of a successful drawing, such as shape,
shading, and negative space. No drawing experience is
necessary, just a desire to observe and learn!
Creek Adventure!
Saturday, August 16, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00
p.m.
Fee: $20/members, $25/non-members, Registration required.
Bring a sack lunch, snacks provided.
Why should kids have all the fun? Ages 16
and up are invited to do some exploring in Timber Creek! After
an introduction giving some background on what we might find,
such as mussels, crayfish, and other invertebrates, we値l head
into the creek. Plan on getting very wet! Bring a towel, shoes
suitable for creek walking (Crocs or similar shoes work well),
and an extra set of clothing.
